The story began in the 1960's when Dubai first experienced the phenomenal economic and commercial growth which still characterizes its development today. The development was spearheaded by the Rulers of Dubai, the Al Maktoum Family and supported by the trading skills of Dubai's prominent business families. Amongst these was the Al Ghurair Group, founded by the Al Ghurair family.

Mr. Saif Al Ghurair, the Group Chairman, began his economic activities in the 1930s when he started pearl diving and trading with his father. The family was the first to start a cement factory in addition to a flour mill, a sugar refinery and an aluminum smelter.

The philosophy has always been to build strong foundations in major market areas, and so the focus was primarily on activities that would foster the economy of Dubai and UAE. This vision and drive paid off as the Group not only prospered from Dubai's rapid development, but actively contributed to it.

The Group has evolved considerably over the last 40 years and, in the last five, we have consolidated our presence and reputation in the Region as one of the most dynamic and successful business groups.
